Musculoskeletal Disorder

When working in a health care facility or nursing home, employees face a variety of challenges when it comes to patient handling. Sometimes they must use force to perform heavy lifting, maintain/control equipment, or perform a routine patient handling task. Other times, they are placed in an awkward posture position, such as reaching above shoulder height, kneeling, leaning over a bed, or twisting their torso while lifting. And above all, where repetition is involved, their daily tasks may include the performance of the same action or sequence of motions. An excess of any of the above scenarios can result in a variety of disorders, generally known as Musculoskeletal Disorder, that have plagued workers.

Musculoskeletal Disorders, also referred to as MSDs, include conditions such as low back pain, rotator cuff injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, sciatica, and other related injuries. Early indications of Musculoskeletal Disorders can involve inflammation of the joints, restriction of joint movement, unrelenting pain, soft tissue swelling, etc. While MSDs commonly develop over a period of time, single events such as a single heavy lift can result in MSDs.

By utilizing ergonomically inclined products when handling patients, such as slide sheets and gait belts, health care facilities can greatly reduce the risk of injury and provide a safer work environment. ErgoSafe™ Products works closely with nursing homes and other care giving institutions to provide patient handling devices to assist caregivers with their daily tasks of moving and repositioning patients. Call ErgoSafe™ today and begin employing safer conditions for your employees and patients

"In expanding our Safe Resident Handling initiative to include bed repositioning, a problematic area which mechanical lifts don't address, we chose and incorporated the ErgoSafe ErgoSlides® repositioning tubes into our program. In addition to significantly reducing risk factors and injuries associated with bed repositioning, some of our centers have also begun to report reductions and/or improvement in bed sores with the use of the Ergoslides®. The Ergoslides® are durable, inexpensive and widely" — Mark T. Santoleri, Corporate Director, Safety and Loss Control, Genesis HealthCare Corporation
